How to start an IM mission in remote?

As with any Interim Management mission, preparation is the key to the success of your rapid integration into the company. With the current health crisis and the large deployment of smart working among employees the “onboarding” of the Interim Manager has become more complicated. Without “face to face” communication it is more difficult to quickly forge relationships with the various stakeholders of your project and even less with other employees to capture the corporate culture and the social climate. Another difficulty is that you can be in an emergency without sufficient preparation because the missions are often to be taken "overnight". The good news is the increased availability of useful digital technology and video conferencing tools.

Here are 10 best practices:

  1. Prepare your presentation pitch in writing and why not in a video to have it broadcast on the company's intranet or in the email announcement of your arrival.

  2. Update your LinkedIn profile, as this is the first thing people visit while waiting to see you for real!

  3. Quickly make half-hour one-to-one reciprocal presentation appointments with your team members and mission stakeholders.

  4. Using the Pomodoro method to organize your individual and group meetings increases your efficiency, maintains contacts more frequently and allows you to have breaks to recharge. Beyond 30 minutes, the attention drops enormously in meetings and even more in videoconferencing.

  5. Apply the golden rules of remote management: Prioritize, Plan, Prepare, Share and Rhythm. It should be noted that remote management is based on trust and decentralization of responsibilities.

  6. Also incorporate in the planning of your meetings some time to socialize, especially in periods of lockdown. Do not forget to take the weather from your guests before starting each meeting.

  7. Put in place an effective and accountable reporting system.

  8. Quickly deploy the use of online information sharing and project management tools to your teams.

  9. Use a headset and a large computer screen to improve your work comfort.

  10. Make regular points with your client about the progress of your mission and, if necessary, with your Interim management company .
